Understanding Your BMI: What It Tells You and What It Doesn't

Body Mass Index, or BMI, has become one of the most commonly cited health numbers — appearing on medical forms, fitness apps, and health checkups everywhere. But despite its popularity, it is often misunderstood.
At its core, BMI is simple: it divides your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres. That is it. It does not know how much of your weight is muscle versus fat, where on your body that weight is distributed, or how physically active you are.
This is why a muscular athlete and a sedentary individual of the same height and weight can have identical BMI scores despite having very different body compositions and health profiles. BMI was originally developed as a population-level screening tool for researchers, not as an individual diagnostic measurement.
So what should you actually do with your BMI number? Treat it as a starting point, not a verdict. If your BMI falls outside the "normal" range, it is worth a conversation with a healthcare professional and worth looking at other indicators — like body fat percentage (try our Body Fat Calculator), waist circumference, energy levels, and overall fitness — rather than reacting to a single number in isolation.
Used this way, BMI remains a useful, free, two-second checkpoint. Just remember it is one data point among many, not the full picture.
