Sets/Reps Guidance
Beginners: use assisted pull-up machines or resistance bands for 3 sets of 5-8 reps. Intermediate/Advanced: 3-4 sets of 6-12 reps.
Instructions
Starting Position: Grip the bar with hands slightly wider than shoulder-width, palms facing away from you, and hang with arms fully extended.
Movement: Pull your body up by driving your elbows down and back until your chin clears the bar. Lower back down under control to a full hang.
Breathing: Exhale as you pull up, inhale as you lower down.
Common Mistakes
- Using momentum (kipping) instead of controlled strength.
- Not achieving a full range of motion (partial reps).
- Shrugging the shoulders up toward the ears instead of engaging the lats.
Safety Considerations
- Build up grip and shoulder strength gradually before attempting weighted pull-ups.
- Avoid dropping suddenly from the top position.
Frequently Asked Questions
Start with assisted pull-up machines, resistance band-assisted pull-ups, or negative pull-ups (jumping to the top and lowering slowly) to build the required strength.
Pull-ups use an overhand (pronated) grip and emphasize the back more; chin-ups use an underhand (supinated) grip and involve the biceps more.
