Steps to Calories Calculator
Turning a daily step count into an estimated calorie burn requires converting steps to distance first, using your stride length, then applying a walking energy-expenditure estimate.
Fill in the form and select Calculate to see your result here.
What is Steps to Calories?
This calculator first estimates your stride length from your height (a commonly used walking stride-to-height ratio), converts your step count to a distance, then applies a walking calorie-burn rate to that distance.
Steps to Calories Formula
Stride length is estimated as roughly 41.5% of height, a commonly cited approximation for walking (running stride is longer). That gives a distance, which is then multiplied by an estimated walking energy cost per kilogram per kilometre.
Stride Length (m) ≈ Height (cm) × 0.415 ÷ 100 Distance (km) = Steps × Stride Length ÷ 1000 Calories Burned ≈ Weight (kg) × Distance (km) × 0.53
Steps to Calories Example
A 170 cm, 70 kg person walking 8,000 steps: stride ≈ 170 × 0.415 ÷ 100 = 0.706 m; distance = 8000 × 0.706 ÷ 1000 ≈ 5.64 km; calories ≈ 70 × 5.64 × 0.53 ≈ 209 kcal.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your daily step count.
- Enter your body weight and height (height is used to estimate stride length).
- Select "Calculate" to see your estimated distance walked and calories burned.
Limitations
- Stride length varies by leg length, walking speed and individual gait, so actual distance covered may differ from this height-based estimate.
- Calorie burn also varies with walking pace and incline — brisk walking or hill walking burns more per kilometre than this baseline estimate assumes.
- A fitness tracker with an accelerometer and heart-rate sensor will generally give a more personalized number.
