Ideal Weight Calculator

This calculator estimates an ideal body weight range using your height and gender, based on the Devine formula — one of the most widely referenced ideal-weight equations in clinical and fitness settings.

What is Ideal Weight?

"Ideal weight" is a population-level reference point derived from height alone — it does not account for muscle mass, frame size or body composition, so it is best treated as a rough anchor rather than a personal target.

Ideal Weight Formula

This calculator uses the Devine formula, originally developed for medical dosing calculations in the 1970s and since adopted widely as a simple ideal-weight reference. It starts from a baseline weight at 5 feet (152.4 cm) and adds a fixed amount per inch of height above that.

Men: Ideal Weight (kg) = 50 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60)
Women: Ideal Weight (kg) = 45.5 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60)

Ideal Weight Example

A 170 cm (66.9 inch) male: 66.9 − 60 = 6.9 inches over 5 feet, so ideal weight = 50 + (2.3 × 6.9) ≈ 65.9 kg.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select your gender.
  2. Enter your height in centimetres.
  3. Select "Calculate" to see your estimated ideal weight.
  4. Use the Body Fat and Lean Body Mass calculators alongside this for a fuller picture of body composition.

Limitations

  • The Devine formula was designed for medication dosing, not fitness or aesthetics — it says nothing about muscle mass, frame size or body fat distribution.
  • Other formulas (Robinson, Miller, Hamwi) give slightly different results for the same height — no single equation is "correct" for every individual.
  • A healthy weight is best thought of as a range, not one fixed number, and varies with muscularity and frame.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not directly — this formula only uses height and was designed for medical dosing. It is a reasonable starting reference point, not a personalized fitness or physique target.

Muscular individuals will often weigh more than this estimate while still being lean and healthy. Pair this with the Body Fat Calculator for a more complete picture.

Several formulas exist (Devine, Robinson, Miller, Hamwi), each from a different era and population. They typically agree within a few kilograms but are not identical.
